New-Build School
Branding & Navigation
Working with the design team, architectural team, and students at the new-build school Heartlands High in Haringey, I designed identities for the houses of the secondary school. The identities were incorporated into the interior design of the new school building, and into clothing and print designs.
Students were excited to contribute their ideas to the project, building pride in their houses and in their school.
Brand guidelines and design specifications were communicated to architects and manufacturers to create consistent branding and signage for each of the school houses around the new building. Design assets were also provided to the school for continued use in branded school materials for the students.
My team met with staff and students at the school to learn more about them and to do presentations to explain the design process to them.
I prepared questionnaires and held workshops with students to identify what their school houses meant to them.
We collated information about the school houses including characteristics and the overall 'personality' of the groups.
The information we got from students was useful as a starting point for our own research.
We had to keep in mind the various purposes and formats that the house branding would take on, as we brainstormed ideas.
Having returned to our clients for feedback on our concept sketches, we could begin developing the identity designs.
We went with a geometric constellation theme that incorporated the symbols associated with each house.
The various elements of the identity designs could be adapted to different purposes, such as way-finding, signage, and decoration.
Mockups of how the brand elements could be applied to interior design were provided to and discussed with staff.
Suggestions for brand applications included signage for lifts, and members of our team developed 3D mockups to visualise our ideas.
I presented ideas for way-finding with mockups created in Adobe Photoshop.
It was exciting to see the various ways that the branding could be applied, to strengthen the students' identification with their houses.
